How to Fix the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) in Windows 11

The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is one of the most feared errors in Windows. When it appears, your computer crashes and shows a blue screen with an error message. While it looks alarming, most BSOD errors can be fixed with the right approach.

What Causes the Blue Screen of Death?

BSOD errors happen when Windows encounters a critical system error it cannot recover from. Common causes include faulty drivers, failing hardware, corrupted system files, and overheating. The stop code on the screen tells you what type of error it is.

Step 1: Note the Stop Code

When a BSOD appears, write down the stop code shown on screen. Common codes include:

Step 2: Boot in Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts Windows with only essential drivers. If the BSOD does not appear in Safe Mode, the problem is likely a third-party driver or software. Press F8 during startup or use a Windows recovery drive to access Safe Mode.

Step 3: Run Diagnostics

Use Windows built-in tools to diagnose the problem. Run Memory Diagnostic (mdsched.exe) to check your RAM. Run CHKDSK to check your hard drive for errors. Use SFC /SCANNOW to repair corrupted system files. These tools can identify and fix many BSOD causes.

Step 4: Update Drivers

Outdated or faulty drivers are the number one cause of BSOD errors. Update your graphics card, network adapter, and chipset drivers. Use Device Manager to check for driver updates, or visit your PC manufacturer website for the latest versions.

Step 5: Check for Overheating

Overheating can cause random BSOD crashes. Check that your computer fans are working, clean out dust, and monitor your CPU temperature using free tools like HWMonitor. If your CPU exceeds 90 degrees Celsius under load, overheating may be the cause.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you have tried all these steps and the BSOD keeps appearing, the problem may be failing hardware. A faulty motherboard, power supply, or hard drive may need professional repair or replacement.
