How to Fix a Frozen Computer: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Every computer user has experienced the frustration of a frozen screen. Before you forcefully shut down your computer, try these steps to recover your work and diagnose the cause.

Wait and Give It Time

Sometimes your computer is not frozen, it is just processing a demanding task. Wait 30-60 seconds before taking action. If the mouse moves but nothing responds, a program may just be busy. If the mouse is completely stuck, move to the next step.

Force Close with Task Manager

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Look for programs marked as Not responding. Select them and click End task. This often resolves the freeze without restarting. If Task Manager will not open, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager from the menu.

Perform a Force Restart

If nothing works, a force restart is necessary. Press and hold the power button on your computer for 10-15 seconds until it turns off completely. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on. This should fix the freeze but may cause you to lose unsaved work.

Update Drivers and Run Diagnostics

Outdated drivers can cause freezing. Update your graphics and chipset drivers from the manufacturer website. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic to check your RAM. Check your hard drive health with CrystalDiskInfo. Replacing failing hardware can prevent future freezes.
