How to Fix Slow Startup in Windows 11
A slow startup can waste minutes of your day. If your Windows computer takes ages to boot, here are the most effective ways to speed it up.
Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs
Many programs automatically add themselves to startup, slowing down your boot time. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and go to the Startup tab. Disable any programs you do not need at startup, especially third-party apps like Spotify, Adobe, or messaging apps.
Enable Fast Startup
Fast Startup is a Windows feature that reduces boot time by saving system files to a hibernation file. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable and check Turn on fast startup.
Upgrade to an SSD
If you are still using an old mechanical hard drive (HDD), upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) is the single best upgrade you can make. An SSD can reduce boot time from several minutes to under 30 seconds.
Reduce Boot Menu Timeout
If you see a boot menu when starting your computer, it may be waiting for you to choose an operating system. Open System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings and change the boot menu timeout from 30 seconds to 5 seconds.
Check for Malware
Malware can significantly slow down startup. Run a full scan with Windows Defender or your preferred antivirus software. Pay special attention to browser hijackers and adware that often load at startup.
